Computers for Kids was started several years ago by sending a container load of computers to Africa and starting a computer school there. After that their mission was to help Central Florida Economically, Educationally, Ecologically, in the same Socially Responsible way. This organization is run completely(100%) by local volunteers who have full/part time jobs or are full/part time students in High School or College.
This organization has given away other people's and organization's old/used computers that have been refurbished by Gift From God Computer Foundation Volunteers to children who need them for school. Over 2500 free computers have been given away in Seminole County alone to school children of all ages. Neighboring Counties in Central Florida have also benefited from this organization as well as other states all over the U.S. and other parts of the world including South America, Africa, and the Caribbean.
There is no red tape to get a child a computer from this organization. If you are an institution like a school, church, community center, or other charity and you are aware of a child in need of a computer to help them with their school work contact G.F.G.C.F. "Computers for Kids". Write them a letter or an email. If you are an individual you can contact them as well. All they ask in return is a thank you letter from the recipient of the computer detailing how that computer was received, is being used, and what difference the computer has made in the recipients life.
How do you donate?
1) If you want to volunteer your time and/or donate old computers just send them an email and they will coordinate times with you to receive your donation of "time", or "equipment".
2) If you want to make regular donations in dollars to the organization you can mail your checks or money orders directly to their contact information on their website. They will accept monthly, quarterly, semi-annual, and annual pledges/donations. Whatever works with your budget.
3) If you want to make me earn your donation dollars you can become a member of my blog and pledge donation dollars against any or all of the races I am running that are listed on my home blog page, or you can join my race team and have people pledge you and your races via my blog page.
Here is how it works.
a) You can pledge by the race - You pledge a flat donation pledge like $20.00 dollars (any amount you are comfortable donating) for whatever race(s) you want.
b) You can pledge by the race/mile(s) - You pledge any race(s) you want but you donate by the miles in that race (like $5.00 a mile or any amount you are comfortable donating). Fractions of miles are rounded up from .1 to the next mile. So 5k races will be counted as 4 miles.
4) After you choose whether you are going to donate by the race or by the race/mile(s) you have the additional option to challenge me to earn even more of your donation dollars.
a) You can "double down dare" your donation if I set a Personal Record (a "PR") Time for that given distance or type of race. (for instance, my best time in a 5k to date is 28 minutes, if I PR and set a better time in an officiated/timed 5k race that tracks the time accurately with my computer chip, you promise to double your donation by the race or race/mile(s).).
b) You can "triple threat dare" your donation if I come in 1st, 2nd, or 3rd in my age category for that race. If I win, place, or show you promise to triple your donation pledge by the race or race/mile(s).
These optional challenges will make me work even harder in my training to earn additional dollars for this charity, and also answer the nagging question I have about finding out how fast I can get this 44 year old body to go this year.
How will you know how fast I actually am going? and when to send in your donations?
After I run a race I will post my official times and the links to those official times so you can check them for yourself. Once I have posted my times and links, all I ask is that you honor your pledge you made prior to that race and mail G.F.G.C.F. "Computers for Kids" your donation dollars, directly to them within a week or two after the race. Make the payment instrument out to "G.F.G.C.F." and write in the memo portion of the check or money order "Computers for Kids Race Team, (and name of the racer with date of the race)". They will contact me with an update of all the funds the Race Team has earned them every month. I will post them on the blog.
